What Causes Type 2 Diabetes?

Type 2 diabetes is the most progressive form of diabetes and can be a serious diagnosis if not managed properly. What causes type 2 diabetes, and what signs or symptoms should you look for?

Here are the causes and signs of type 2 diabetes.

Diabetes has been around for a very long time and type 2 is extremely common among Americans. Diabetes is developed over a long period of time in someone’s life and there are a lot of factors that play into the risk of it. Preventing diabetes is so important because at this time there is no known cure. Since type 2 diabetes is extremely prevalent, it is important to know the things that you can do to prevent this disease and prevent your loved ones from having this disease.


What is the Cause?

While it is not black and white what causes type 2 diabetes, there are certain things we know and can base preventive measures on that. Unfortunately, sometimes there is family history that you just can’t avoid. Another factor that plays into your diagnosis is if you are past the age of 45. If that is the case, then that puts you more at risk

Other risk factors involved in your diagnosis include the type of lifestyle that you live and what you weigh. A great step to take to prevent diabetes is to incorporate exercise into your daily routine and sticking to it. If you are a smoker, you are also more at risk of getting diabetes. Eliminating smoking is a great prevention method.


Signs of Diabetes

There are many risk factors that play into having type 2 diabetes. However, you can fall outside of these factors and still have diabetes. These symptoms usually develop over time, but some happen quite quickly.

Here are some signs of diabetes:

  • Being thirsty all the time
  • Urge to use the restroom more
  • Tiredness
  • Loss of weight
  • Impaired vision
  • Extreme numbness

Diabetes Prevention

While a diabetes diagnosis cannot be cured, there are certain steps you can take to help prevent it. Managing your weight is the number one thing you can do help prevent a diabetes diagnosis, along with eating a healthy nutritious diet. Exercising on a regular basis has also been shown to decrease your type 2 diabetes risk. Avoid smoking and talk with your doctor. Knowing your genetic history and risk will help you to make better decisions based on your unique health concerns.
